Featured Business – Gourmet Goons
The Gourmet Goons business is built on a long standing camaraderie and a mutual desire to travel the country learning about local food and bush tucker.
Max Faulkner, a qualified chef and Jerry King together share 30 years of hospitality experience. The pair travel regularly to remote communities, where their culinary exploration taught them to find and cook with real, ethical Australian ingredients, sourced directly from local producers.
Based in Byron Bay, the business started out selling ‘ready-to-eat’ offerings at festivals and markets, with the Gourmet Goons using organic produce to create gluten free, diary free and allergy conscious meals.
The Gourmet Goons had the product and the passion but found as their business evolved they needed specific business guidance and skills.
“There are so many different aspects to running a small business,” Jerry King said. “We worked with our Small Biz Connect advisor to gain the business management skills we needed to grow a successful business.”
The Gourmet Goons are currently building their business in Byron Bay offering catering services, attending the local farmers markets and producing their own unique range of condiments and sauces.
Local Small Biz Connect advisor, Sam Tebbutt from NORTEC Small Business Support Unit, said initially the Goon’s required advice on business modelling, forward planning, marketing and record keeping to establish their business.
“As the business began to grow my role shifted and became more focused on helping the Goons to manage that growth,” he reflected.
NORTEC Small Business Solutions offer a range of private and government funded business support and advisory programs (including the State Government funded Small Biz Connect Program) that assist small business owners to strengthen and grow their business.
