This qualification provides a pathway to work in the Hospitality Industry. This qualification allows for multiskilling and for specialisation in accommodation services, food and beverage and gaming.



This qualification reflects the role of individuals who have a range of well-developed hospitality service, sales or operational skills and sound knowledge of industry operations. Using discretion and judgement, they work with some independence and under limited supervision using plans, policies and procedures to guide work activities.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, motels, clubs, pubs, cafés, and coffee shops. This qualification allows for multiskilling and for specialisation in accommodation services, food and beverage and gaming.

  • food and beverage attendant
  • front desk receptionist
  • front office assistant
  • function attendant

  • guest service agent
  • housekeeper

Delivery & Assessment

This course is delivered over a 16 week period including practical experience. Assessment items for this course may include a combination of project work, case studies, written assignments, role plays, practical demonstrations and observation of performance in the workplace or simulated work environment.

Smart & Skilled - NSW Only EnrolmentsGeneral eligibility
From 2016, all students, regardless of the level of any previous qualifications held, are able to access subsidised Smart and Skilled training up to Certificate III level. This means that even if you have a higher level qualification you may still be eligible to re-train to enter (or re-enter) the workforce.
You can also enrol in subsidised training at Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level, depending on the availability of funding for these courses. Previous qualifications do not affect eligibility but may affect the student fee.

To be eligible for Smart and Skilled funding at the time of enrolment in approved qualification you must either:

  • Live or work in NSW (determined by postcode of the usual place of residence or place or work) OR
  • Live in a defined interstate NSW border area (as identified by a postcode in the list set out in the Operating Guidelines) and is Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; and
  • an Australian citizen; or
  • a permanent Australian resident or:
  • a humanitarian visa holder; or
  • a New Zealand citizen; and
  • aged 15 years or older; and
  • no longer in secondary education
